 Free sites:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) have a huge collection of family records online, and accessing this site is free of any charge. The website is: www.familysearch.org

A site which I find very useful is: www.freebmd.org.uk

This has birth, marriage and death records from the start of national registration in 1837 to the first half of 20^th Century (and a few later records). Not all the records are on this database yet. If you are chasing someone's marriage, and you get a result with the name, where the marriage was registered, and the Volume and page references given, you can click on the page reference and you get a copy of the page with more names, which will normally include the spouse - a very useful feature!

www.cwgc.org If you have relatives lost in the wars, then the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has records of almost all casualties in conflict.

One more site you may care to look at, which links up with lots of records of different types, and many of which are held in local records offices, such as the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies in Aylesbury: discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Not completely free:

Another British site. with a free trial period, and then a subscription for 3 or 12 months, is www.ancestry.co.uk At present access to some of the census indexes is free. This site has details of the six censuses from 1851 to 1901 and plenty of records of births, marriages and deaths. You may be able to trace back at least 200 years.

Parish register transcriptions and other resources by the Buckinghamshire Family History Society

The St Giles Cheddington pack of three booklets is available at a very reasonable £8.00 inc postage (Ref P524). St Mary Pitstone is available at £6.00 (Ref P528), and St Mary the Virgin Mentmore at £6.00 (Ref P525)

Also you can obtain a transcript of the 1851 Census on CD-ROM for the whole County for £10.50 inc postage (Ref C001) and a printout of just Cheddington (Ref P005) for £3.50
